My Notes

Sarah Drasner's Engineering Management for the Rest of Us is the book I wish I'd had years ago. Written by a developer-turned-manager who clearly remembers what it felt like to be on the other side, it cuts through the management theory and gets practical fast.

What sets this apart is the honesty. Drasner doesn't pretend management is a clean upgrade from engineering — she acknowledges the ambiguity, the emotional weight, and the reality that your value is now measured in entirely different ways. That's refreshing.

The section on one-on-ones alone is worth the read. Her framing around psychological safety, career growth, and how to give feedback without breaking trust maps directly to the kind of leadership I want to embody as I step further into team-building work.

If you've ever found yourself leading people without a roadmap, this is your field manual.
